Transparent Silicon Solar Cells for Building Windows

•2 min read

A research team from Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology South Korea to develop new technology for transparent solar cells recently published in the journal Jules. Scientific. It is known that silicon chips are mainly resistant to light penetration, but the team used silicon chips with a thickness of 200 micrometers after adjusting them using very small holes close to the diameter of the human hair and can not be detected by the naked eye, but allows the passage of light naturally without difference in color

Solar panels absorb sunlight and convert photons into usable energy. Therefore, the difficulty of making transparent solar panels is that sunlight passes through the transparent material. This means that the process that generates electricity in the solar cell cannot begin because no light is absorbed. This is why the Korean team reached an energy conversion efficiency of 12.2%, which is a high number compared to the efficiency of transparent solar cells produced using other technologies such as solar organic cells. It is worth mentioning here that there are solar energy companies that make partially transparent panels by increasing the distances between cells, allowing the passage of light partially and the user can determine and choose the number of cells in one panel, for example, instead of 60 cells we may use 30 cells and thus reduce the capacity in half and get half of the area of the panel to pass the light
